Lot 51 Australia - Tasmania SG#237 (SC# 94) 1/2d Dull Green , 1880-1911 Engraved Pictorial Issue, A Fine Used Single, V over Crown Wmk Sideways With Dual Cancels, British Receiving/Transit Cancel & June 20 1904 Hobert CDS
A fine used single of the 1/2d dull green from the 1880-1911 Engraved Pictorial Issue, v over crown wmk sideways with dual cancels, British receiving/transit cancel & June 20 1904 Hobert CDS.
The typical journey to the UK from Tasmania was 30-32 days via the suez canal. The British Cancel is July 2 1904, only 12 days later, so it cannot be a UK cancel. Instead it must have been struck on a mail boat as the clerk saw part of the stamp uncancelled.
Gibbons doesn't list this variety, so we estimate it at $35. The stamp offered here grades 73 as follows:
Centering/Margins: 35/60
Paper Freshness: 5/5
Colour: 5/5
Impression: 5/5
Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5
Perforations: 10/10
Cancellation: 8/10
