Lot 291 British Solomon Islands SG#55b (SC# 62var) 6d Olive Green & Light Blue King George V, 1935 Silver Jubilee Issue, A VFOG Single, Frame Printed Triple, Twice Albino, Showing Two Albino Impressions, Visible In The Top, Right & Bottom Margins
A VFOG single of the 6d olive green & light blue King George V from the 1935 Silver Jubilee Issue, frame printed triple, twice albino, showing two albino impressions, visible in the top, right & bottom margins. This occurs because the vignettes were printed first, and then the sheets were fed back into the printer and were "overprinted" with the frames. This was fed in three times, likely because the printer was low on ink, or the ink wasn't coming through, and the relief and pressure inherent in the printing left clear, raised albino impressions on the stamp that can be seen. This is a rare occurrence that can be seen on other Commonwealth issues from time to time, usually De La Rue printings, as is the case here.
The first albino impression is almost in register, but is shifted downward and to the right, so that the right frameline is visible in the right margin, and the bottom frameline is visible in the bottom margin. The second albino impression is shifted about 2mm upward, so that 1910-1935 is visible in the top margin. An incredible rarity that is destined for the finest collection of Silver Jubilees.
Gibbons values this at 1,300 GBP, or about $2,600. Our estimate of the value is $1,300+. The stamp offered here grades 80 as follows:
