Lot 275 Newfoundland #, 3 Fine Used Covers, Resource Issue Postal History Including Scarce 1941 Perf 13.5 5c Die 1 On Censored Cover, Three Covers, One Of Which Is A Great Rarity

3 fine used covers of the from the, resource issue postal history including scarce 1941 perf 13.5 5c die 1 on censored cover, three covers, one of which is a great rarity.

The three covers are; 1)a common 5c die 2 caribou from the first issue, tied to a VF Charles Bell corner card cover sent from St. John's to New York, 2) A 1949 double weight airmail cover sent to USA franked with 7x 2c green waterlow resources issue instead of 27c airmail stamps. This is quite scarce and is worth about $150 on its own and 3) A fine censored cover sent from Wood's Island in the Bay of Islands (a small hsitoric fishing outport that was completely resettled in the 1960's, to Boston MA and franked with the very rare perf 13.5 Waterloo die 1 printing of the 5c Caribou (verified by measuring the design - 21mm versus 20.4 for the Perkins Bacon printing) and checking the perf. The rarity of this stamp arises from its transitional nature, as printing was moved from Perkins Bacon to Waterlow. Waterlow's perforating Machines gauged 12.4-12.9, so 13.5 must have been done temporarily by P.B after Waterlow had printed the sheets. Exceptionally rare on cover - so much so that Unitrade doesn't price it. Some minor discoloration & edge tears.

Unitrade doesn't list these varieties, so we estimate them at $600. The stamp offered here grades 70 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 30/60

Paper Freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5
