A very fine used cover of the 2c carmine Washington from the 1903 Issue, humorous image & message on reverse, sent from Boston MA (june 30 1907) to St. John's NFLD (1907).

Newfoundland was not a part of Canada during this time. There is also a T8 Postage Due marking on the face, presumably because the card, being made of leather rather than paper, was initially treated as a letter rather than a postcard. The marking was however stroked out, indicating that the authorities decided to treat it as a postcard. The tannins in the leather have completely acidified that stamp, making it very brittle and creased. I am actually surprised it hasn't fallen off. St. John's Arrival back stamp.

Scott doesn't list this variety, so we estimate it at $20. The stamp offered here grades 75 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 35/60

Paper Freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10
