A very fine used envelope of the 5c blue from the 1903 Hartford Manufacturing Issue, commercial envelope, farrel, foundry & Marchine co, Ansonia, Conn. wmk 14, knife 70, sent from Ansonia to Germany December 16 1911.
Farrel, Foundry & Machine Co was a massive guilded age producer of massive iron gears, sugar cane crushing mills and specialized rubber/plastics processing machinery. Knife 70 is a scarcer type, produced speciafically for industrial firms who needed strong, burst resistent envelopes. It is very scarce on a 5c denomination. By 1911 backstamps were not required unless mail was registered. Watermark 14 used in 1911 is very late.
Scott doesn't list this variety, so we estimate it at $200. The envelope offered here grades VF.
