A Note About Unissued Imperforates, Sheetlets of One and Souvenir Sheets For Former French Colonies:
As you view the sale you will see the same issues over and over again for the former French Colonies: 1969 Moon Landing, 1972 Conquest of Space, 1975 Apollo-Soyuz Mission, 1976 Viking Mars Project, 1977 Zepppelin Issue, 1980 European Space Agency, 1976 US Bicentennial, 1986 Haley's Comet, 1983 Air Ballon Bicentennial and so on. Those issues typically consist of an issued set of regular and airmail stamps, a gold foil embossed high value, and two higher value souvenir sheets each containing a single stamp. However, most, if not all these issues can be found imperforate, with souvenir sheets containing just one of each value and sometimes even se-tenant souvenir sheets containing all values. The gold foil embossed high values can also be found in sheetlets of one, and these are usually noted in Scott and valued. However, none of the other items usually are. So, what we have done here is to value them where the basic stamps are listed, at the same prices, and where they are entirely unlisted for the same value as a similar listed item of the same face value. We think this is generally conservative, as most footnoted items in Scott are usually values at a premium over the basic stamps, sometimes quite a considerable premium. It must be borne in mind that while these countries are often associated with low value, cancelled to order "wallpaper", these higher value sets and singles were genuinely scarce, and are in a different league than the lower value stamps, which are, as any experienced collector can attest, quite plentiful.
A note about postage charges: due to the bulky nature of the packets and the larger lots containing souvenir sheets, we will be charging actual postage incurred to send the lots throught this sale, unless the postage comes to less than $3 in total, in which case we will continue to charge our standard rates. We will invoice the lots as normal, with basic postal charges and then will follow up with a second invoice after we return from the post office, and the cost of the postage is known. One exception is for smaller lots on 102 cards, which contain no souvenir sheets or covers.
