Lot 9 United States #250a, 250, 267, 279B, 300, 319Fj 1894-1908 1c Green Franklin and 2c Carmine Rose/red Washington Bureau Banknotes, Group of 7 Covers, Different Types, Cat. $12.90 USD
A group of 7 covers from the 1894 unwatermarked Bureau Banknote issue, the 1895-1897 Watermarked issue, the 1897-1903 issue, and the 1902-1908 Second Bureau Issue, all used to addresses in Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York, except for the 1908 cover, which was sent to Cornwall, UK. For the unwatermarked issue we have a carmine type 1 and a rose type 1, The carmine type 1 was sent from Philadelphia on December 18, 1894 and arrived in Schenectady, NY and then Charlton NY on December 19, 1894. The carmine rose cover was mailed from Vineland NJ on June 25, 1895. Philatelphia transit backstamp and Williamson arrival backstamp on the same day. The watermarked issue includes a carmine rose type III. It is close to pink, but the date of July 25, 1906 predates the earliest known date of the pink, which is November 1897. It covered the same route as the previous cover. Then there are two type IV’s in red and deep red, both mailed in March and September 1902. The 1c Franklin Second Bureau issue is on a cover mailed from New York to Sandusky Ohio in 1908 and the 2c 1908 Bureau issue is used on a cover from Lexington to Cornwall, UK. It is a type 2 in carmine rose. That cover has a horizontal crease, not affecting the stamp, the stamp from the watermarked Bureau issue is damaged, so this cover is not counted, and one of the red type IV covers is worn at the upper right corner, but otherwise all the covers are VF.
2016 Scott Specialized values these covers at $12.90.
