Lot 60 Prince Edward Island #13d 3c Rose Perf. 12.5 Single Usage on March 13, 1873 Cover to Duncan Crawford Esq, in Wood Islands, Rare Wood Islands Backstamp, 1 of only 2 Recorded Strikes

A VG local cover sent from Charlottetown to Duncan Crawford in Wood Islands, PEI. Crawford was a prominent citizen, teaching there for 12 years, serving as Justice of the Peace, owning 100 acre farm and operating a general store. He was also elected to the House of assembly in 1879. He died in 1921. The stamp is cancelled by a cork triangle, and the cover has a rare strike of a Wood Islands CDS backstamp - one of only two known strikes. The cover is missing a small part of the backflap and there is extensive tearing of the front at the bottom. These tears have all been sealed, but they reduce the grade of the cover to VG. Unitrade cat. for fine $100. Net est. $50.
