Lot 53 Canada #37iii 3c Orange Red Queen Victoria, 1870-1897 Small Queen Issue, Perf. 11.5 x 12, Single Usage on Covers to Quebec and Railway Cover to Albany, NY, F-VF Est. $140

Two covers, one fine and the other VF, sent to Quebec from Ottawa on July 20, 1877 and to Albany NY along the Great Western Railway. Both are franked with perf. 11.5 x 12 Montreal printings. On the Quebec cover, the stamp is tied by a circular diamond wedge cork cancel and on the Albany cover by a strike of the G.W.R East cancellation dated February 25, 1878 (listed in Jarett as type 1606 and adds approximately $100 to the value of the cover).
One interesting thing about the Quebec cover is all the fountain pen doodling on both sides. The signature for the recipient, Meredith appears multiple times, along with the word “Donkey” and “The President of the Committee”
Valued in this condition in the Canadian Posted Letter Guide at $40 plus $100 for the Great Western Railway cancel for a total estimate of $140.
