Lot #4 Canada #BK54 1c Violet Brown & 4c Carmine Red, 1967-1973 Centennial Issue, A VFNH 25c Booklet Containing Panes of 5 + Label, DF Grey Front Cover, DF-fl Grey Back Cover, NF Violet and DF-fl Violet Panes, Smooth Dex, HF Interleaves, Streaky Gum

A VFNH complete 25c booklet, containing a pane of 5 + label of the 1c violet brown Nothern Lights and Dogsled Team and the 4c carmine red Seaway Lock stamps from the 1967-1973 Centennial issue, printed on different papers, with the 1c pane being on NF violet, and the 4c carmine-red on DF-fl violet pane with very sparse LF and MF fibres. Streaky dex gum and HF interleaving between panes. The front cover is DF grey and the back cover is DF-fl grey, with very few LF fibres.

Although Unitrade and Harris list NF papers, in reality there are several variations of this, which differ, according to how deep the colour is under UV light, and the actual colour, which varies from grey to deep violet. Irwin and Freeman list these exhaustively in their book on this issue, and the above booklet is only one of these varieties. The 1c pane is on the the dead paper, which is not the quite the same as NF. It is basically darker - the complete absence of any reflected light. Similarly, Unitrade lists a DF-fl paper, and several varieties exist, depending on the colour under UV light, and the concentration and brightness of fluorescent fibres which makes the paper appear brighter. None of the specialized catalogues deal with the fluorescence of the covers themselves, but this booklet can be found with LF-fl covers as well as other varieties of DF and DF-fl.

The 1c and 4c booklet stamps printed by CBN were printed in at least two shades each:

  • The 1c stamps are found in brown, deep brown and violet brown shades.
  • The 4c stamps are found in carmine, carmine-red, and bright carmine-red.

The gum used on these booklets is either smooth dextrine, streaky dextrine, or dextrine gum with a satin sheen.

Harris values this booklet at $25, and Unitrade does not list it. The booklet offered here grades 80.

The perfs are unlisted and unidentified in these lots, but a combination of any of the following measurements exist for each side: 12, 11.9, 11.95 and 11.85. However, they are difficult to measure accurately on the vertical sides, due to the straight edges, which make correctly aligning an instanta gauge impossible.
