Lot 345 South Georgia SC#30-30a 50p Cerise 1971-1972 De La Rue Pictorial Definitive Issue, VFNH Examples on Glazed Paper, One With Sideways Watermark

VFNH examples of the 50p cerise from the 1971-1972 De La Rue Pictorial Surcharged Definitive Issue, on HB glazed paper, one with upright watermark and one with sideways watermark. The stamps both have PVA gum. The definitive issues printed by De La Rue between 1963 and 1977 show a wide variety of different fluorescent papers under UV light, as well as differences in the gum used, with both dextrine and PVA gums. The early printings, mostly made before 1969 are on unsurfaced, DF paper, with some fluorescent varieties, and dextrine gum. The printings from the late 1960's are on chalky paper and have PVA gum. The watermark on the chalky papers is usually very difficult to see and is usually upright on the horizontal designs and sideways on the vertical ones. The subsequent printings from the early 1970's have the watermark positions reversed, i.e. sideways on the horizontal designs and upright on the vertical designs. The last printings made between 1975 and 1978 have the new watermark with smaller crown. The chalky papers are generally either HF or HB under UV light. Printings made after 1969 on chalky or glazed ordinary papers that are either HB or HF on both the front and back.

Scott values these stamps at $55 = approximately $71.50. The stamps offered here grade 75 and 80.
