Lot 307 Canada #15ii 5c Orange Red, Beaver, 1859-1867 First Cents Issue, Single Usage of Perf. 11.75 x 12 on January 19, 1865 Cover to Montreal, Quebec, Beautiful Penmanship and Addressed to Lieutenant Colonel Coffin
A VG-F cover sent from Ottawa to Montreal on January 19, 1865. Franked with a VF centered single of the 5c orange red Beaver, perf. 11.75 x 12. The stamp is tied by a lovely strike of the Ottawa duplex cancel. The cover is addressed to Lieutenant Colonel Coffin, an ordinance lands agent, in very beautiful handwriting. Unfortunately the cover has a piece missing out of the upper left corner on the front, reducing the grade to VG. But the stamp is VF, so the cover will at least be worth the value of the VF stamp, but it would otherwise have been a VF cover. Unitrade values a VF stamp at $50.
