Lot 297 Canada #15 5c Vermilion, Beaver, 1859-1867 First Cents Issue, Single Usage of Perf. 11.75 x 12 on July 1, 1867 Mourning Cover to Montreal, Sent on Confederation Day!
A VF mourning cover sent from Kingston to Montreal on July 1, 1867, the day Canada became a country. Franked with a fine centered single of the 5c vermilion Beaver, perf. 11.75 x 12. The stamp is lightly cancelled with a barred grid cancel, but is not tied. July 17 Acton split ring CDS transit stamp on the face and a nice Montreal Post Office double circle CDS receiving backstamp. The Firby "Canadian Posted Letter Guide" values an VF cover at $60, but this one should be worth slightly more because of the date of use. Net est. $75.
