Lot 287 Nigeria #114-116, 118/122 1961 UPU and Independence, Combination Usage on Swiss Embassy Cover to West Cameroons, Net. Est. $15
Registered airmail cover sent on November 27, 1961 from Lagos sub post office #13 to Manyemen, West Cameroon. Franked with the Id, 3d and 1/3d UPI-J Issue, and the 3d, 6d and 2/6d First Anniversary of Independence Issue, paying a total of 4/10d postage, being a multiple of the airmail rate to Cameroons, plus the registration fee. The stamps are tied by clear strikes of Proud Type R51 oval registry handstamp (5 GBP on cover in Proud). The cover went from Lagos to Tikko, Camerroons, arriving there on November 29, 1961 (Proud type R3, last recorded by Proud on June 24, 1961). The letter arrived in Manyemen on December 4, 1961. A few minor wrinkles, not affecting the stamps. Still F-VF overall.
The cancellations list in Proud for 5 GBP and the cover value to a common destination is approximately $4 applying Gibbons’ prescribed multiplier of 2 to the Scott value of $1.85 for the stamps off cover. Camereoun is a scarcer destination, as are all African countries, as most mail left the continent. So, the value of this cover, taking the destination, rate, franking and cancellations into account is $15.
