Lot 209 Newfoundland #65 5c Violet Mining, 1897 Discovery Of Newfoundland Issue, A Very Fine Used Single With Plate Variety 'Dotted 1' in 1897 & a Damaged, VF Appearing Example With Slash In 'W'

A very fine used single of the 5c violet Mining from the 1897 Discovery Of Newfoundland Issue with an unlisted plate variety 'dotted 1' in 1897 & a damaged, but VF appearing example showing a small slash in 'W' of Newfoundland.

The stamp with the slash in 'w' has a patched hole, so its not counted. Still the first plate varieties we've seen on these.

Unitrade values this at $5. The stamp offered here grades 78 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 40/60

Paper Freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 8/10

Cancellation: 10/10

Although Unittrade does not list any varieties in this issue, many of the values can be found with slight variations in shade, as well as three different papers: opaque soft horizontal and vertical wove paper that does not show clear mesh; a thinner, softer translucent wove, that shows clear mesh, which can be horizontal or vertical; and a thinner translucent wove that shows the design through the back.
