A VG-F OG example of the 2d green and carmine from the 1892 Overprinted GB Issue with type 1 overprint from column 1/7. The overprint shows a Hole in V of Rivers. This is NOT listed in the Ince paper on the stamps of Niger Coast Protectorate. 2022 Scott Classic cat. $40.

The overprinting on this issue was done with a setting in which the overprint differs between alternate columns in the sheet. Each sheet contained 12 columns, and there were six different basic overprints, which repeated in each half of the sheet. So, type 1 is found in columns 1 and 7. Type 2 is found in columns 2 and 8. Type 3 is found in columns 3 and 9. Type 4 is found in columns 4 and 10. Type 5 is found in columns 5 and 11, and type 6 is found in columns 9 6 and 12. Type 1 and type 2 both show the "B" and "H" of "British" raised slightly above the other letters. The only difference between them is that on type 1 "British" is 8 mm wide, whereas on type 2 it is only 7.75 mm wide. On type 3 the "B" is dropped slightly, while the H is raised. On type 4 the "R" is slanting to the right and the H is raised. On type 5 the B and H are raised very slightly, but "Oil Rivers" is 16.75 mm wide, whereas on all other types it is 16.5 mm wide. Finally, on Type 6 the B is level and the H is raised. In addition to the six types, there are 31 positions in each sheet where the overprint exhibits a constant variety in the form of errant dots, broken letters or deformed letters.
