Lot 456 Norfolk Island #1-12 1/2d Orange - 2/- Bistre Brown, 1947-1959 Ball Bay Definitive Issue, A Complete Fine OG Set on Toned Paper, With Additional Shade Varieties

A primarily fine OG complete set of the initial printings of the 1/2d orange to 2/- bistre brown Ball Bay stamps from the 1957-1959 definitive issue. All are printed on toned unwatermarked paper and have shiny toned gum. Includes additional shade varieties of the 1/2d orange, and 4d claret. The 3.5d is damaged, with a corner thin, so is included here but not counted.

These stamps were printed by the Reserve Bank of Australia and thus will mirror Australian issues of the period, in terms of the varieties that exist. The printings made before 1956 will all be on toned paper, and so all the values should exist thus. The white papers were introduced in 1956, and given that the next definitive set does not include any values replacing the ones in this set, it is reasonable to conclude that all values of the set should at least exist on white paper also.

Scott lists these stamps at $17.45 VFNH. The stamps offered here grade between 65 and 75 as follows:

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5
