Canada #588, iii (SG#695) 3c Maroon Borden 1972-1978 Caricature Issue 5 Different Papers/Shades VF-75 NH
Five very fine NH singles of the 3c dull maroon, deep maroon and maroon Robert Borden stamps from the 1973-1977 Caricature Issue, printed on different papers. Printed on vertical wove paper showing no ribbing on either the front, or the back. General OP-2 Ottawa tagging, 4 mm wide, of moderate strength (clearly visible to the naked eye, but not dark), and light strength (barely visible to the naked eye), and glowing a bright yellow under ultraviolet light. Comb perforated 12.0 x 12.5. Smooth, creamy PVA gum with a satin sheen. The paper gives different reactions under UV light as follows:
- one deep maroon stamp, one dull maron stamp and one maroon stamp are on paper giving a low fluorescent grey blue reaction on the face, and back, with a low density concentration of low fluorescent fibres, a sparse concentration of medium fluorescent fibres, very few high fluorescent fibres and very few brownish woodpulp fibres visible on both sides. The tagging is of moderate strength.
- one deep maroon stamp is on paper giving a low fluorescent bluish white reaction on the face and back, with a low density concentration of low fluorescent fibres, a sparse concentration of medium fluorescent fibres, very few high fluorescent fibres and very few brownish woodpulp fibres visible in the paper. The tagging is of light strength.
- one dull maroon stamp is on paper giving a dull fluorescent ivory reaction on the front and back, with a sparse concentration of low fluorescent fibres, a very sparse concentration of medium fluorescent fibres, very few high fluorescent fibres and very few brownish woodpulp fibres, visible in the paper. The tagging is of moderate strength.
Unitrade lists #588 as LF paper, and 588iii as DF paper. I have found at least 16 varieties of fluorescence and tagging that closely fit the description of LF overall, and 13 varietes of DF paper. These four stamps represent three varietes of these paper types. Unitrade values five VF-75 NH singles at $1.50. The stamps offered here grade 75 as follows: Margins/centering: 45/70 Paper freshness: 5/5 Colour: 5/5 Impression: 5/5 Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5 Perforations: 10/10 Note: the above scan is a stock photo as are all my scans for material after 1952.The item (s) you will receive has (have) been carefully checked to adhere to the above grading standards, so while it (they) may not be exactly the same, it (they) will be of the same quality. Also, I do not provide back scans of NH stamps or blocks after 1952 unless they are required to illustrate some attribute of the paper or gum.
