A complete VFOG set of the 5 centimes to 1 franc 50 centimes stamps from the 1934-1936 King George V Photogravure Issue of Great Britain, which has been overprinted and surcharged in French Currency for use in Morocco.

This issue in Great Britain exists in three design sizes:

  • Large format, which measures 18.7 x 22.5 mm, on the 1d and 1.5d only.
  • Intermediate format, which measures 18.4 x 22.2 mm, on the 1/2d, 1d and 1.5d only.
  • Small format, which measures 17.9 x 21.7 mm, on all values.

Basically, the original issue from 1934 was just the 1d and 1.5d in the large format. The PO found that it was too difficult to perforate them in this size as the margins were too small, so they reduced the size to intermediate. This wasn't suitable either, so the size was reduced again to the small size and retained. The catalogues do not list the low values existing in the larger sizes, but they do indeed exist with the Morocco Agencies overprints, as you will see in some of the other lots in this sale. This particular set however is all small format stamps .

Gibbons lists these stamps at 11.65 pounds (approx. $23.30) for hinged. All the stamps are hinged, except for the 1 franc, which is NH.  The stamps offered here grade between 75 and 84 as follows:

Centering/Margins 45/70, 50/70 and 54/70

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5
