Lagos SG#30 2d Dull Mauve and Deep Dull Blue, Queen Victoria 1887-1902 Bicoloured Keyplate Issue, a Beautiful VFNH LL Corner Block of a Pre-1891 Printing, With "Current Number 1"
A fine mint NH lower left corner block of the 2d mauve and deep dull blue Queen Victoria stamp from the 1887-1902 Bicoloured Keyplate Issue, showing the "current number 1", indcating that it is a pre-1892 printing. The current number system was instituted by De La Rue to indicate the order of laying down of the plates for specific colonies, and was abandoned in 1891. So any block that contains the number, which is always shown in a rectangle with voided corners, must have been printed before 1892. Gibbons values a hinged single at 7.5 pounds (approximately $15). Never hinged material from this time period is very scarce, and warrants a premium of at least 200%. Also, a further premium of 100% is warranted for the multiple with the number. So our estimate of the value is thus $360, as follows: (15 x 4 x 3 x 2). The block offered here grades 70 as follows:
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
