Most all of the Plimpton envelopes were produces on paper with wmk 8 - the single wrapped US monogram. It had been postly phased out by the time the 4c carmien envelopes were being produced. So these were produced using leftover Morgan paper stock with the angled watermark indicating either that the paper sheets were fed into the Plimpton cutting press at an unaligned angle, or the paper rolls were cut diagonally to maximize the number of envelopes harvested per sheet. The knife 59 classification comes from the 1900 Scott catalogue where all types are illustrated. So there were three separate events that account for the rarity; 1) A paper feeding error in which obsolete 1882 Morgan contract paper was fed into the machinery instead of Wmk 8 paper, 2) the alignment error, in which the paper sheets or rolls were fed at a sharp tilt resulting in the diagonal watermark variety or 3) the mechanical template selection instead of running through the knife 25 template, they used the specialized knife 59 template.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\n\u003cp\u003eScott doesn't list this variety, so we estimate it at $2500 - $5000, based on our online research.
