Lot 484 Luxembourg SC#O28 1Fr on 37.5c Yellow Brown 1878-1880, A Fair Used Example, Click on Listing to See ALL Pictures, Estimated Value $5 USD

A fair used example of the 1fr on 37.5c yellow brown from the 1878-1880 Official Overprints Type 2 Frankfurt Printing. Without a certificate these overprints are difficult to expertize, as they have been fairly extensively forged. I have checked the basic stamp against the stamp forgeries website, and can confirm that the stamp is genuine. I have also attempted to determine the authenticuty of the overprint as explained in this week's blog post. Based on my findings, I do believe this to be a genuine overprint. It does however have a clear and closed tear at the top that extends well over 5 mm into the design. There is some gum remaining and a hinge remainder that together are sealing the tear completely and making the stamp appear more sound than it actually is. There is also a somewhat smudgy cancel, which further lowers the grade. The combined impact of these modifiers is to lower the grade to fair, from VF. Scott cat. $110 for VF. Our estimate of the value based on the condition is $5.
