Lot #48 Canada #BK68b 1c Purple Brown, 3c Slate Purple, And 7c Slate Green & Emerald, 1967-1973 Centennial Issue, A VFNH 50c Booklet, Type 2 Pre Stamped Cover, Clear Seal Strip, MF-fl & LF-fl Paper, Large Glossy Sticker, With Offset of Cover Text

A VFNH complete 50c booklet, containing two panes of 5 plus label of the 1c purple brown Northern Lights and Dogsled Team, 3c slate purple Combine and Rig and 7c slate green and emerald Transportation stamps from the 1967-1973 Centennial issue, with type 2 "Pre Stamped" cover that has a clear sealing strip. The top pane is printed on MF-fl paper and the 7c stamps are slate green, while the bottom pane is printed on LF-fl paper, with the 7c stamps being emerald. The sticker covering the value on the booklet is the large glossy type, and shows offset of text from the back cover of another booklet. This is the first example I have encountered of offset appearing on one of the stickers. These booklets were only sold in Toronto on an experimental basis to test the public reaction to 50c booklets. Only 18,000 in total were issued - 10,000 with large sticker and 8,000 with small sticker, and those quantities encompass all the varieties of paper, cover type and shade.

Although Unitrade, McCann and Harris list LF and MF paper, there are several variations of this paper. All give a bluish to bluish white glow under UV, but the papers contain different concentratons of LF and MF fibres, which make the paper appear brighter, as well as different concentrations of brownish woodpulp fibres, which counterct the fluorescence, making the paper appear duller. All of the papers on BK66 and BK68 are vertically ribbed.

The 1c, 3c and 7c booklet stamps printed by BABN were printed in at least two shades:

  • The 1c stamps are found in purple brown and violet brown shades.
  • The 3c stamps are found in slate purple and blackish violet.
  • The 7c stamps are found in emerald and slate green.

The gum used on these booklets is a white PVA with an eggshell sheen.

Unitrade values th basic booklet at $20, but our estimate of the value for this variety, given how scarce these booklets are is $75. The booklet offered here is VF grading 80.
