However, the genuine bluish paper can be identified by the light bluish overtone, which looks almost grayish. Most very blue appearing examples of these high values are altered white papers. Another identifying characteristic of the genuine bluish paper is the clearer vertical mesh visible in the paper when viewed from back. The later white paper is more tightly woven and appears more finely finished than the bluish paper, which can appear coarse. The bluish paper comes from the 1883 printings and the squared circle cancel comes from this period. Most all of the later white paper printings are cancelled with CDS's of various kinds.
