Lot 252 Hong Kong SG#74 3 Blue & Grey King Edward VII, 1902-1903 Crown CA Keyplate Issue, A VG Used Example, Multiple Crown CA Watermark, Base Shear Tear, But Still Very Presentable!

A VG used example of the 3 blue & grey King Edward VII from the 1902-1903 Crown CA Keyplate Issue with multiple crown CA watermark. This stamp is an example of a modern stamp tragedy where someone tried to remove it from an album and tore the stamp in the process, rather than carefully removing the hinge first. The tear is a base shear tear, as opposed to a lateral tear, which means that it is not at all noticeable from the front. We haven't attempted any kind of repair, but the tear could, and probably should be sealed up with a hinge applied to the back, just to prevent any further damage. It is a very scarce high value, and a stamp that is missing from most collections, so even in this condition it makes a nice spacefiller.

Gibbons values this at 425 pounds, which is approximately $722.5. However, our estimate of the value given the condition is $40. The stamp offered here grades 56 as follows:

Centering/Margins: 40/60

Paper Freshness: 3/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of Visible Paper Flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 8/10

Cancellation: 10/10

Adjustment for mentioned faults: -20 points.
