Lot 150 Newfoundland #133, 138 3c,9c Brown, Slate Green War Memorial, Caribou Crossing, 1923 - 1924 Pictoral Issue, On Large 12c Registered Cover Sent To Switzerland Both Comb Perf, July 1924 Lucerne Backstamp, So Contemporary

Large 12c registered cover with the 3c,9c brown, slate green War Memorial, Caribou Crossing from the 1923 - 1924 Pictoral Issue sent to Switzerland both comb perf, July 1924 Lucerne backstamp, so contemporary. The 9c is the key value in the set, or one of them, and we have never seen it on cover. The 3c was creased on the upper right corner. Both are just barely tied to the envelope by the cancels with the 9c just barely tying at the bottom perfs under EN of cents. So i have little doubt that the stamps belong. The cover is a tad wrinkled along the right edge as normal for a cover this size.

Unitrade values this at $80 for single usage. Our estimated value is $40-$50.

Perforations on all Newfoundland stamps have been very carefully checked using an Instant perforation gauge, which measures accurately to the nearest .05 of a hole. Unitrade does state the number of perforation heads used by Whitehead and Morris to print the issues from the 1911 Royal Family Issue up to the Publicity Issue, but it would appear from a study of the stamps that a considerable amount of variation in the perforations on the issues printed by them does indeed exist. The Walsh and Butte Specialized Newfoundland Catalogue lists these variations, but does not price them, as far as I know. So, we have valued them using the basic Unitrade prices.
