Lot 137 Canada #629/643 8c Multicoloured Various Designs 1974 Commemorative Issues, 11 Schering Drug Company First Day Covers Franked With Singles, MF, HF and HB Paper, Cat. Value $33
A group of 11 Schering Drug Company First Day Covers franked with singles. Generally all F/VF. The paper fluorescence of the stamps MF for all issues, HF for one of the Winnipeg Centennial covers, and HB for the Agricultural Education issue. Four covers contain the original drug pamphlets. Schering Corporation is a Canadian subsidiary of Schering-Plough, which is a giant drug company in the US, which became Merck, which most people know. It had a practice of sending its drug marketing pamphlets to doctors, using first day covers, which sometimes contained stamps as well. For this reason they are generally always addressed. The Winnipeg Centennial Issue is represented by both MF and HF singles. Dickinson/Unitrade catalogue value for the basic covers is $33. Our estimate of the value after adding appropriate premiums is $34.
A note about how we calculated Dickinson Catalogue values in conjunction with Unitrade. Dickinson does not list paper varieties on FDC's, nor do they price anything other than a single. FDC's are typically regarded as being similar to mint stamps in the sense that if they are unaddressed, they are still valid for postage. So, that is why the FDC price in Unitrade is typically slightly more than a mint single. That being the case, what we have done where we have a better paper variety on an FDC is we have taken the Dickinson catalogue value and added the mint value of the paper variety to the FDC price. If there is a pair or a block, we have added the Unitrade value of the extra stamps to the Dickinson cover price.
