Lagos SG#32 3d Mauve and Chestnut 1887-1901 Queen Victoria Bicoloured Keyplate Issue, Beautiful CDS Used Example, Cancelled With August 21, 1899 Abeokuta CDS

Sold out

A well centered and scarce socked-on-the-nose CDS used example of the 3d mauve and chestnut Queen Victoria stamp from the 1887-1901 Bicoloured Keyplate Issue.  The cancellation is a perfect strike of an August 21, 1899 Abeokuta CDS. According to Proud, this is the earliest known date. However, I sold a July 4 example some weeks back, so while it is very early, it is not the earliest date.  Gibbons values a fine used example at 3.25 pounds (approximately $6.50). However, that value is not relevant for a scarce cancel like this. A more reasonable value is $25.  The stamp offered here grades 80 as follows:

Centering/margins: 40/60

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10

Cancellation: 10/10
