Lagos SG#14a 4d Rose Carmine, Queen Victoria, 1876-1879 Crown CC Keyplate Issue, With Watermark Sideways, A Fine Unused Example

$699.00

A reasonably well centered and fine unused (no gum) example of this very rare stamp, which exists because of a specific press operator at De La Rue who inserted the sheets of watermarked paper sideways into the press. Because of him, similar varieties can be found on the stamps of Gambia and Sierra Leone among others. It is one of the scarcest of the Queen Victoria issues to find mint, and this is the only unused example I have come across in almost 10 years of amassing my Lagos stock.  The stamp is line perf. 14, confirming that it comes from the 1876 printing.

Gibbons values a mint OG example at 1,700 pounds, which is approximately $2,890 CDN. Unused should be worth between 35-50% of that amount, or between $1,000 and $1,400. The example offered here grades F-73 as follows:

Centering/margins: 45/70

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 8/10
