A lovely very fine 4-margin used example of this classic stamp, printed from the earliest of the black plates, with a lovely black Maltese cross cancellation. Gibbons Concise cat 375 pounds for fine used, which converts to approximately $650. Very fine condition should be worth at least 25% more than this, so about $820. This is the scarcest of the black plate printings of the 1d red brown, not to be confused with the more common printings made from plate 12 onwards. The example offered here grades VF-84 as follows:
