Canada #523avar 5c Multicolored Strip of 5, 1970 Christmas Issue, a VFNH Vertical Strip Showing Spectacular Misperf, High Fluorescent Smooth Paper

Sold out

A well centered (left to right) and very fine NH vertical strip of 5 of the 5c stamps from the 1970 Christmas Issue, showing a 2-3 mm downward shift of the horizontal perforations. Printed on medium fluorescent smooth paper. There is a diagonal gum crease affecting the santa claus stamp in the strip, but otherwise this is VF and the first such misperf strip I have come across. This comes from the Henri Stern Collection according to notes by John Jamieson.

Although not listed in Unitrade, this issue can be found on both smooth and vertical ribbed papers. The ribbing, when present can always be seen from the gummed side, but also the front as well, in most cases.

Unitrade does not list these types of perforation shifts, but my estimate of the value is $50.

The strip offered here grades 75 as follows:

Margins/centering: 50/70

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10

Adjustment for gum crease on santa claus stamp: - 5 points
