Canada #401a 1c Brown Queen Elizabeth II, 1962-1967 Cameo Issue, A Group of 4 VFNH Booklet Panes, Showing Different Shades, Gums Papers

Sold out

An interesting and attractive grouping of 4 very fine NH (VF-75 to VF-80) booklet panes of the 1c brown stamp of the 1962-1967 Cameo Issue, showing a range of shades, paper types and gum types.

In terms of paper, Unitrade lists these panes on both DF and LF paper, though NF paper exists as well. The paper of these stamps is generally horizontal wove, as opposed to vertical wove for the sheet stamps. They can be found both with and without light vertical ribbing on the gummed side.

Also, in most instances, the paper is opaque, showing only a faint image of the design through the back. However, some stamps are found with more of the design visible on the back, and the stamp is also known printed in aniline ink, which suffuses through the back of the stamps.

In terms of gum, there are generally three types, two of which are present in this group:

    1. A smooth, cream coloured gum that has a semi-gloss sheen.
    2. A streaky, cream coloured gum that has a semi-gloss sheen.
    3. A grainy cream coloured textured gum with a satin sheen. This is not present in this lot, but has been seen to exist on the 4c value. I have not seen this gum on any of the booklet panes.

In terms of shade, there are shade variations on each value. The 1c brown can be found in a deep brown and a duller, lighter brown.

The perforations also vary due to the fact that CBN used up to four different machines to perforate sheets during this period. The old machines gauging 12 and 11.9 were used to perforate most of the original printings, and then the newer machines were used for the later printings. One of these new machines gauges 11.95, while the other one introduced sometime in 1961 gauges 11.85. Compounds can also be found of both these gauges, so that all sheet stamps can be found with many different perforation measurements that at least include: 11.95 x 11.9, 11.95 x 11.85, 11.9 x 11.95, 11.9, 11.95, 11.85 x 11.95, 11.85 x 11.9, 12 x 11.9, 11.9 x 12 and 11.85 x 12. It is difficult to measure the perforations accurately on these, due to the straight edges on the panes, but these booklets exhibit all the variation that the sheet stamps do.

    This lot includes:

    • lighter brown on NF paper, with no ribbing and smooth gum.
    • chocolate on DF paper with streaky gum.
    • Chocolate on vertical ribbed DF paper with streaky gum.
    • Chocolate on smooth DF paper with smooth gum.

The Unitrade catalogue value of these panes is $16, counting them as basic varieties. A wonderful opportunity to get started on a more specialized collection of these booklet panes.
