Australia #223A, 295 (SG#228, 230b) 1/2d Orange & 6d Chocolate 1949-1959 Unwatermarked Zoological Definitives, Fine and VFNH Examples of Different Papers and Shades
A small selection of the 1/2d and 6d values from the 1949-1959 unwatermarked Zoological definitive set, showing different papers and shades.
Neither Gibbons, nor Scott pay any attention to differences in the thickness of papers used for these issues although the Australian Specialized catalogue does. The issues during this period do show differences in the thickness of the papers that is easy to see by comparing their opacity, when viewed from the back. The later printings from the 1950's are on an opaque paper, whereas the printings from 1949 and the very early 1950's are on a thinner, more translucent unwatermarked paper. The 6d and one 1/2d are on the opaque paper, while the other two 1/2d's are on the earlier translucent paper.
Gibbons lists these at 8.1 pounds (approx.$16.20) for VFNH. The stamps offered here grade between 65 and 80 as follows:
Centering/Margins 35/70, 40/70 and 50/70
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
