Australia #249/296 (SG#254/271) 1953 Commemoratives & 1953-1954 Queen Elizabeth II Definitives, A Specialized Lot of 26 Mostly VF Used Stamps
A primarily VF used group of 26 stamps, comprising the commemoratives of 1953 and the 1953-1954 Queen Elizabeth II 1d-6.5d definitives, showing a variety of shade and paper differences that are not listed, either in Gibbons, or Scott.
Most all of the engraved stamps issued during the Elizabethan period can be found printed in different shades of the basic colour, and this lot includes several of these. In addition, both the watermarked and unwatermarked paper can be found in both thinner and thicker versions, which can easily be distinguished by looking at the relative opacity of the stamps when viewed from the back. .
The Queen Elizabeth II stamps include:
- 1d purple - 3 varieties
- 2.5d blue - 3 varieties
- 3d deep grey green - 2 varieties
- 3.5d deep brown red unwatermarked - 2 varieties
- 6.5d orange unwatermarked - 2 varieties
- 3.5d deep brown red watermarked - 2 varieties
- 6.5d orange watermarked
There are a few missing stamps, namely SG255, 265, 266 and 270.
Gibbons lists the basic stamps at 9.30 pounds (approx. $18.60) for VF used. The stamps here grade between 70 and 84, but mostly all at least 75 and above.
