Canada #85 (SG#166) 2c Lavender, Carmine & Black 1898 Christmas Major Re-Entry XF-90 OG
A perfectly centered, fresh and extremely fine mint OG example in the lavender and aniline carmine shade. Solid inked oceans and several varieties including:
1. The right cable shows a clear re-touch as shown in the attached scan.
2. All of the horizontal shading in the map is weakly or strongly doubled as shown in the attached scans.
3. The shading in South America is weak to missing.
4. There are two extra islands in the South Pacific as shown in the left scan.
There is a very shallow, pinhead sized area of thinning at the top. It can only really be seen if the stamp is held up to a strong light or immersed in watermark fluid. Still a very desirable stamp. Unitrade values a VF-75 OG example without any re-entry at $60 and $150 for the major re-entry of "Canada Postage" which is different from this one. However, this re-entry is in my opinion just as spectacular. The stamp offered here grades 90 as follows:
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
Adjustment for tiny thin: -10 points
