Canada #227 (SG#351) $1 Steel Blue Champlain Monument 1935-1937 Dated Die Issue XF-94 LH

SKU 227XF94LH1

A nearly perfectly centered and extremely fine mint LH example of the $1 steel blue Champlain Monument stamp from the 1935-37 Dated Die Issue. Printed on vertical wove paper with no visible mesh, but fine vertical mesh is visible when held up to a string light. Smooth deep cream gum that has a semi-gloss sheen, and a few brownish vertical streaks. Although not mentioned in Unitrade, this issue has at least 8 different paper and gum type combinations and this stamp exists in at least 7 different shades of blue. The paper varies according to the direction of the weave (horizontal versus vertical) and the direction and visibility of the mesh. The gum varies in colour and sheen. In my opinion these varieties are every bit as collectible as perforation and shade varieties on the other issues. The scans under "more images" show the various gum and paper types in more detail as well as all shades. Line perf. 12.0. Unitrade values a VF-75 OG single at $90. While well centered examples are the norm on this issue, nearly perfectly centered stamps like this are not common, and our price reflects this fact. The stamp offered here grades XF-94 LH as follows:

Margins/centering: 64/70

Paper freshness: 5/5

Colour: 5/5

Impression: 5/5

Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5

Perforations: 10/10
