Canada #227 (SG#351) $1 Steel Blue Champlain Monument 1935-1937 Dated Die Issue VF-75 OG
A very fine mint OG example of the $1 steel blue Champlain Monument stamp from the 1935-37 Dated Die Issue, showing a small hairline flaw between the A and D of "Canada". Printed on vertical wove paper with fine vertical mesh that is only visible with strong back lighting, and with smooth, cream gum that has a satin sheen. Although not mentioned in Unitrade, this issue has at least 8 different paper and gum type combinations and this stamp exists in at least 7 different shades of blue. The paper varies according to the direction of the weave (horizontal versus vertical) and the direction and visibility of the mesh. The gum varies in colour and sheen. In my opinion these varieties are every bit as collectible as perforation and shade varieties on the other issues. The scans under "more images” show the various gum and paper types in more detail as well as all shades. Line perf. 12.0. Unitrade values a VF-75 OG single at $90. The stamp offered here grades VF-75 OG as follows:
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
