Canada #227 (SG#351) $1 Deep Blue Champlain Monument 1935-1937 Dated Die Issue VG-62 OG
A very good mint OG example of the $1 deep blue Champlain Monument stamp from the 1935-37 Dated Die Issue. Printed on vertical wove paper with horizontal mesh and with smooth, mottled yellowish cream gum that has a semi-gloss sheen. Although not mentioned in Unitrade, this issue has at least 8 different paper and gum type combinations and this stamp exists in at least 7 different shades of blue. The paper varies according to the direction of the weave (horizontal versus vertical) and the direction and visibility of the mesh. The gum varies in colour and sheen. In my opinion these varieties are every bit as collectible as perforation and shade varieties on the other issues. The scans under "more images” show the various gum and paper types in more detail as well as all shades. Line perf. 12.0. Most of the left hand perforations have been affected by a scissor cut. This reduces the grade from VF-82 to VG-62. Unitrade values a F-65 OG single at $45. The stamp offered here grades VG-62 OG as follows:
Paper freshness: 3/5 (some gum soaking affecting the upper right perforation tips)
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
Additional adjustment for trimmed perforations: - 10 points
