Canada #227 (SG#351) $1 Deep Blue Champlain Monument 1935-1937 Dated Die Issue GEM-100 NH
A perfectly centered and gem mint NH example of the $1 deep blue Champlain Monument stamp from the 1935-37 Dated Die Issue. Printed on vertical wove paper with coarse horizontal mesh being visible, and with smooth deep cream gum that has a satin sheen. Although not mentioned in Unitrade, this issue has at least 8 different paper and gum type combinations and this stamp exists in at least 7 different shades of blue. The paper varies according to the direction of the weave (horizontal versus vertical) and the direction and visibility of the mesh. The gum varies in colour and sheen. In my opinion these varieties are every bit as collectible as perforation and shade varieties on the other issues. The scans under "more images" show the various gum and paper types in more detail as well as all shades. Line perf. 12.0. Unitrade values a VF-75 NH single at $135. While reasonably well centered examples are the norm for this issue, stamps grading above VF-84 are scarce, and the highest grades are very scarce. Our price reflects this scarcity. For the record the gum does have a small area of discolouration from an ink transfer that occured during printing. It is not a gum disturbance. A superb stamp of the highest callibre for a collector seeking only the best available quality. The stamp offered here grades GEM-100 NH as follows:
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
