Canada #223i (SG#347) 10c Carmine Red Mountie on Horseback 1935-1937 Dated Die Issue F-70 NH
A fine mint NH example of the 10c carmine red Mountie stamp from the 1935-37 Dated Die Issue. Printed on vertical wove paper, showing no clear mesh, and deep cream gum with a satin sheen, and light streaks. Although not mentioned in Unitrade, this issue has at least 8 different paper and gum type combinations, and there are at least three shades of the carmine. The paper varies according to the direction of the weave (horizontal versus vertical) and the direction and visibility of the mesh. The gum varies in colour and sheen. In my opinion these varieties are every bit as collectible as perforation and shade varieties on the other issues. The scans show the various gum and paper types found on this issue in more detail. There is a light internal crease that is just visible from the front. This reduces the grade from VF-80 to F-70. Line perf. 12.0. Unitrade values a F-65 NH single at $7.80. The stamp offered here graded F-70 NH as follows:
Paper freshness: 5/5
Absence of visible paper flaws: 5/5
Adjustment for light internal crease: -10 points.
