Lot 323 South Africa SG#B238/B251, 276-277 1/2c - 20c 1969-1971 Pictorial Definitive Issue, Re-Drawn Designs, Watermarked Tete-Beche RSA in Triangles on Phosphorized Paper, A Fine NH and VFNH Partially Complete Set, Including Some Additional Shades

A partially complete and fine NH and VFNH set of the re-drawn designs of the 1969-1971 Pictorial definitive issue, with the multiple tete-beche RSA in triangle watermark, on phosphorized paper. The stamps are printed on five different types of phosphorized paper, including: HF/DF, HF/LF-fl, HF/HF, HF/DF and HF/MF. The gum types are a mixture of dextrine and PVA gums. All of the varieties are identified on the back of the 102 card that the stamps are in. Includes both listed shades of the 5c. Also includes the new designs for the 1/2c, 1c, 4c and 15c. This issue is one of the most complicated from modern South Africa, and rivals any of the meatier definitive issues of the 1960's from any country. Gibbons lists at least 5 sets up to 1970, and Scott lists 6. However, there are many more varieties when you add phosphorized papers, gum variations and shades into the mix. This is an unlisted variation of the fifth set, with the re-drawn designs, on chalky phosphorized paper with multiple tete-beche RSA in triangle watermark. Gibbons does not list the phosphorized paper because it cannot be identified without a UV lamp. It is similar to the stamps with phosphor frame, except that the light coloured phosphor extends accross the entire stamp.

p>Gibbons values the non-phosphorized stamps at 22 GBP = approximately $37.40. The stamps offered here grade between 65 and 84.
