Lot 80 Canada McCann #BK76jvar 1972-1978 Caricature Issue, A Complete 50c Counter Booklet, HF CF-100 Canuck Cover, Clear Sealer, DF-fl 108-109 mm Pane, Extra Hairline Tag Bars

A complete 50c counter booklet, with HF CF-100 Canuck cover, clear sealer, and DF-fl 108-109 mm pane. This example shows extra hairline tag bars down 1/3 and 2/3.

McCann values the basic booklet at $4. However, McCann's prices are way out of date, as his catalogue has not been updated since 1996. The minimum Unitrade value for these booklets is $2 against McCann's $1 for the most common of these booklets. This would generally suggest that the actual value should be double the McCann price at a minimum. Neither McCann nor Unitrade list this variety as well. Our estimate, based on the combination of varieties is $25. The booklet offered here grades 80 as follows:

Centering of panes: 50/70

Cover Freshness: 10/10

Condition of Cover Edges 5/5

Freshness of Panes: 5/5

Absence of Visible Cover Flaws or Stains: 5/5

Condition of contents: 5/5

A Note About the Caricature Booklets

The three booklets produced by BABN for this issue are extremely complex. The complexity comes from the fact that:

1. The cover fluorescence levels vary, and cover the entire range from non-fluorescent to hibrite.

2. The panes fluorescence also varies within the same range.

3. The pane widths vary from 70 mm, which is the most common to 76mm.

4. Two different methods were used to seal the booklets. One is a clear, thin bead of sealer, known as clear sealer, which does go brown over time, and the other was a 5mm wide band of brownish adhesive known as self sealer.

5. Ten different cover designs were used.

6. In addition to all the above, many constant and non-constant varieties are to be found on the stamps, as well as different shades for the stamps themselves.

Of all three booklets, BK74, being the 25c vending machine booklet is the most complex by far, followed by the 50c booklet (BK76). The $1 booklet, BK75 is relatively straightforward, by contrast. In our descriptions we are using McCann numbers, as his catalogue provides the most comprehensive listing, but our valuations use a combination of Unitrade and Adminware prices, as well as our estimates based on our judgement and taking into account McCann's prices as they stood in 1996, when his catalogue was last updated.
